Gosh, I can be so manic!
My mom and dad have rather green fingers, my dad loves dipping his fingers into the soil, cleaning the flower beds and cutting the grass. I grew up watching them growing a beautiful garden where every straw's place was planned. But oh boy, did I hate the garden work. When I heard the mowing machine I got a tic. I never would have thought I would get interested in gardening!
But never say never! Last few years, after we bought the house with it's garden, my fingers are getting greener and greener and since I never do anything halfway, this year I've bought seeds for 15 kinds of veggies and herbs!!
Here you can see the variety of seeds bags... white and red kohlrabi, Brussels sprouts, ruccola, basil, mint, coriander, tomatoes, radish, carrots, lavender, spring bulb, peas... and I've also gotten potatoes, read onions and garlic...
I've already set out the peas and tomatoes and the herbs (I got great pots for the herbs you can stack up to five levels). I've also presown the kohlrabis and Brussels sprouts. The cold weather in Iceland doesn't allow for the seeds to go right out to the beds. My next job will be to set out the rest outside. I'm afraid I will drown you with gardening pictures in the coming weeks (if everything goes well)!!
May 14th: peas, tomatoes, basil, coriander, lavender and mint are set in pots. White and red kohlrabi and Brussel sprouts ready for presowing:
Lavender outside, I also set out in pots inside
White and red kohlrabi and Brussel sprouts, presown
May 17th: presown seeds are peeking up, didn't take more than three days!
May 28th: Everything is growing at "speed of light!" - I need to start prickling the herbs :)
Red kohlrabi (below)
My herbs and lavender pots, from top and down; lavender, basil, coriander and mint
The mint, really tiny trying to peek up
Arna is really happy with the result :)
Another thing I want to show you is this fabulous sunflower. Arna planted the seed in her kindergarten the week before Easter. After the Easter she brought her little 10 cm (4in) high flower home in a milk carton (I was too brainless and forgot to take a picture). Very soon the flower really started to grow (the living room is like the best greenhouse with those big windows turning south). In 2-3 weeks we had to buy a new flower pot and a higher stick for support... but only few days later we had to buy yet ANOTHER stick and a BIGGER pot. Now the flower is standing on the living room floor, vapouring over it's own success and it's head is starting to show. Arna talks to it everyday but now she needs a stairs to do it. We treat the flower as the 5th child and nourish it spiritually and physically every day... it's so exciting!! :)
The flower arrived from kindergarten April 28th (was about 10 cm (4in) high), unfortunatly we forgot to take a picture.
May 14th. New pot and a higher stick:
May 17th. Yet another pot and higher stick, the flower is off the table and on the floor
May 28th. One more higher stick bought (hopefully the last one) and the flower head is showing. Arna is so happy! :)
